Relocation
- Determining the effective Pattern

Overview

here follows some thoughts on relocation...

Factors determining the response to a relocated chart:

  1. The will of the soul
  2. The ray type
  3. The astrology
  4. The time factor
  5. Conclusion

1. The will of the soul

I like to look upon the new pattern resulting from a relocated chart as either an emergent seed or as a karmic ordination. In both these cases, the will of the soul is involved, and therefore the effect of the relocated pattern should be enhanced. But the impulse to relocate may not have originated from causal levels, in which case the effect may be greatly lessened. Alternatively, it is the will of the soul to perpetuate the natal pattern. Also, the actual outcome is dependent upon the responsiveness of the instrument--the persona. Maybe to help discern to what extent the will of the soul is involved, one could ask if the relocation was a ‘spiritual’ or ‘destined’ move or not? If the answer to this is in the affirmative, one would have to proceed to find out whether the soul wills to perpetuate the natal pattern, and/or if the persona is unresponsive to the relocated pattern. If the answer to one of these questions are in the affirmative, the natal pattern is still the most effective. A clue to the right answer of these questions can be gained by studying the charts for when the relocation occurred, to see what may have set it off in the original pattern. This would be most helpful in trying to understand wherefrom the impulse to relocate originated.

If the impulse to relocate originated on causal levels, the seed contains a pattern more in line with a certain archetype or purpose. It therefore allows easier access to certain energies serving this purpose. I like to think that sometimes it is required by the soul to endow the persona with other energies or allow easier access to certain other energies than the ones available in the natal chart. I think it may even be called upon to say that sometimes the actual birth and its resultant pattern is a poor approximation of the archetypal pattern intended by the soul for the immediate cycle of incarnation. Just as circumstance sometimes interfere with our own appointments and intentions so this can happen to the soul in its creative process. The Angles may be slightly off or even in the wrong signs altogether. Then, maybe one way of dealing with this for the soul is to relocate and thereby make the energies more immediately accessible and acutely present for the developing persona.

Even if the soul was successful in the timing of its appearance, we know how difficult it can be to work with election astrology, where there may always be ‘contra-indications’--factors contrary to those intended. Within the window of time given for the appearance not all factors will apparently serve the immediate purposes to be fulfilled, but the major indications or signatures will be there. However, if any of the contrary factors are too strong, the soul may relocate for that reason. The same can happen if a pattern is too weak or un-supportive.

2. The ray type

Generally, I think that rays two, four and six more easily respond to relocation together with some of the third ray types. I surmise rays one, five and seven to be more firm in their charting.

3. The astrology

I am also playing with the hypothesis that it is possible to judge from the horoscope if the chart is relocatable or not. When looking at this, we should understand that we are dealing with the state of the base of the spine or root chakra. Therefore any indicators relating to this chakra should be of interest to evaluate. In the horoscopic picture it is primarily the IC--the lowest heavens--that represent this root. The IC (Imum Coeli) represent the ground, the firm base, the foundation and anchor within our lives. The zodiacal archetype for the IC and resultant fourth house is the constellation of Cancer. The traditional exoteric ruler is of course the Moon. Hence when investigating the matter of relocation, these are the primary indicators to judge from.

In general, I will say that the mutable mode and cross indicates a greater tendency or ability to respond to the re-configured pattern emerging with a different location. The earth signs are probably less prone to respond to another pattern than the natal one.

I would think that Scorpio and the uprooting power of Pluto, can remove ones foundations only to have a new foundation or location rise out of the ashes of the old. The instable influence of Gemini and its fluid interplay gives a heightened sensitivity to duality, and is therefore a good candidate. Having the submerging or escapist influence of Pisces at IC can be particularly confusing and perhaps no clear guidelines can be given--probably Atlantis had this!

Probably Mercury is the primary planet giving someone the ability to respond to a relocated chart. Pluto can also be involved. Also of course Apollon is a good indicator.

So if these mentioned influences are strong with the fourth cusp, its house and rulers, or aspects thereto, then you should definitely have to consider the relocated chart.

4. The space and time factor

Just the other day, I had a client born in Hungary in 1949 who escaped from there in 1956 and then found her way to Sweden a little later. She has lived in Sweden ever since (apart from when she took some international UN missions), so she has been here for over forty years. She had a birth certificate for Hungary, but still I was checking for events, how the chart worked and trying to rectify it. When investigating her progressed natal chart, what I found was rather a lack of events in some cases where angles were progressed to major planets and configurations in the chart. Apparently nothing significant happened when it was supposed to. I then after some non-successful validation work resorted to relocate her chart to Sweden--and voila! It clicked and started to make sense in terms of the progressed angles and her experiences in life.

Having said this we must realize that time is also a factor to consider. The longer you stay in a location, the more rooted you become in those ethers and thereby responsive to the relocated pattern. There also seem to be some truth to the statement that the further you move, the more influential will that pattern be, as that pattern has more 'integrity' than the patterns resulting from a shorter move.

5. Conclusion

To conclude, I would say that the natal pattern is always effective to some extent. The thing is to determine its percentage of effectiveness--is it 100% effective or only 25% effective?

I believe a consideration of the factors listed above to be determining of that percentage of effectiveness. I would also be very interested in knowing how other counseling astrologers deal with the issue of relocation. What are your experiences and policy here?
